If you drive in Qatar, check your traffic fines early. The Ministry of Interior's official payment page lets you look up violations by vehicle plate number, Qatar ID number or establishment ID, and fines can also be paid in the Metrash app, at traffic departments or at unified service centres. In a July 2026 awareness message, reported by The Peninsula and Qatar Tribune, the Ministry reminded motorists that selected violations get a 50% discount if paid within one month of the date the fine is issued, and that fines left unpaid for more than 12 months are referred to the prosecution, after which settlement is no longer allowed. Since 1 September 2024, anyone with outstanding traffic violations cannot leave Qatar through any land, air or sea border until the fines are paid, and taking a vehicle out of the country requires a General Directorate of Traffic permit that is only issued if the car has no outstanding violations (trips to GCC countries need no permit, but the car must still have no violations). Paying for a family member? Metrash has an Other Vehicle Violations option under Traffic, then Violations, where you enter their plate number and Qatar ID. The one-off 2024 amnesty, which gave 50% off older fines, ran from 1 June to 31 August 2024 and has ended. Not every fine qualifies for the discount, so check the amount shown before you pay.
